Hi,
I’m recently released from custody and i am trying to find somewhere to rent. My question is as follows:
Should i be open and inform a landlord that i am recently released or should i only inform if they ask me directly?
Under the Rehabilitation of offenders act i only legally need to disclose if i am asked, and i’m not even sure if this applies to renting a property.
Thanks
Are you on staright release or are you under probation? If the latter as long as they know where you are living and are happy with it
And as long as you dont contravene any licence conditions you MAY have then i dont see why it would be relevent the inly thing to bear in mind is your ability to secure work in order to pay for property (if you are claiming then I would exoect a long wait and several rejections
Also a landlord will more than likely want to see bank statements (there will obv be a gap in transactions) and obv a gap in your credit history persoanlly i would look more towards local authority/housing association for a while and build up your credit and bank transactions this is only my opinion I am NOT a landlord
Yes, on probation, and i’m extremely low risk, so probation are actually me to choose anywhere i want in the county to live.
The problem with Local authority is they say if you’ve just been released and you don’t have somewhere, then you’re intentionally homeless and they don’t have to help, it’s what the councils now say. Also, Housing associations have such long waiting lists… so Private renting is the only way forward…
Thanks for your insigh, though.
As a LL, I would want to know simply because it’s a massively important part of the story that makes up who you are and knowing who my tenants are as individual people is really important to me. As Gary says, there will be gaps in your recent financial and letting history and if you weren’t to tell me honestly about why that was the case, then we’d not start building the trust that is important to the LL-T relationship. It might help to know that if you did tell me that you were recently out of prison, it wouldn’t automatically disqualify you from renting from me. Other things might, but that wouldn’t be one of them.
As a woman I would want to know.
I have declined tenants when I googled them, just through an enquiry, and the first search was their criminal behaviour reported in the local paper .
I met a tradesperson through my builder who was too confrontational when I asked him if he could cut the bath panel outside rather than in the house .
When I googled him he had a column dedicated to him in the daily telegraph.
All about risk. I let to an individual about 10 years ago. He said the “office” will pay his rent, turns out he meant the probation office. One day I went around and he had gone. Police had taken him away ,in lounge I found a police Evidence bag with his boots and a bolt cutter nearby. I re-let it and thought to myself “lesson learnt” check the men s ankles for electronic tag next time .If they do not show a bare ankle …well. ( got to be careful there not to give the wrong impression !)
Hi does anyone know of any landlords that will consider an ex offender. Low risk. Who will have to comply with electronic monitoring. Has employment as job is secured for release. It’s litrallt just the accommodation I’m struggling to find for him at the moment. Looking in Manchester. Thanks x
