Hi please can you give me some guidance as a new landlord on how long I should expect reference checks to take once an application and holding deposit is received?

a few days to a week maybe… all depends on how quickly those concerned respond. If you’re not using RentNow then you can continue to canvass new applicants even if one has paid a holding deposit so that you have others ready to go if the referencing doesn’t complete or fails. That would be my recommendation. In the meantime, get on to your applicant and tell them referencing needs hurrying along or it will jeopardise their application. Get them to do the running around.
