Is it possible to get a reference from my last tenancy that just states that my rent was always paid on time ?

We don’t know. Why don’t you ask your last landlord that question?
Bear in mind that advertising LLs might often discount any reference from your current LL. The reason? If you are a nightmare tenant, they might say anything they can to get rid of you.
I often ask applicants if they can supply references from their previous LL i.e. the one before the one they’re currently renting from. They’re the LL references I can trust to be honest as they’ve nothing to lose by telling the truth.

I asked our agent and she agreed. I also have a good reference from our landlord before that, so doubly good for my situation. tatemono is correct, but asking for written and verbal reference from the agent will help, even if some agents and landlords lie to get rid of a bad tenant.
