I’ve lived and worked abroad for the last 20 years, owned my properties so no references for renting and because I’ve lived abroad, I have no credit score in the UK!
I’m in full time employment, single, no pets and over 55.
is this an issue to get somewhere to rent?

It shouldn’t be if your employer will give you a reference and your verifiable employment income is sufficient. I have a new tenant who was in exactly the same position as you, and her references approved her for insurance purposes. That was references obtained directly from Legal for Landlords, not Open Rent references.
