Seeking Advice & Support as Tenant Facing Unsafe Living Conditions

Hi everyone,
I’m reaching out as a tenant who is currently going through a really difficult and stressful housing situation, and I’d really appreciate any advice or support from the community.

I’ve been renting a property in Bedford, where the living conditions have become unsafe and unfit for human habitation — especially due to chemical hazards and damp/mould issues in the kitchen. Despite repeatedly informing my landlord, she has refused to take proper action. I have two young children (ages 9 and 7, attending Springfield Primary School), and I’m deeply concerned about their health and safety.

To make matters worse:

  • I was forced to carry out and pay for painting and repairs myself, which should have been her responsibility.

  • She has served me a Section 21 notice, and is demanding full rent, even though the property is hazardous.

  • I’ve already reported the situation to Bedford Council (Environmental Health) and Citizens Advice.

This entire experience has been distressing and unjust. I’m feeling overwhelmed and could really use some support, guidance, or legal advice from anyone who’s dealt with something similar.

If you have recommendations for:

  • Free or low-cost legal aid
  • Tenants’ rights organisations
  • Community groups that support families in housing crisis
  • Or if you just want to share advice/experience

You can contact Shelter or the CAB for free legal advice, but it sounds as though youve already done the things you needed to do. If you reported these problems to the landlord in writing, (including electronic communication) before you received the s21 notice, then its likely that notice will be invalid under the retaliatory eviction legislation.

If you submit a defence to the court there will be a hearing and you can request a solicitor be apponited to represent you at no cost to you.
