I have received quote from a contractor for installing new combi boiler and it’s very expensive over £ 6000, anyone got any experience in this and what is the reasonable cost range?
The recent contractors said the Worcester boiler I have is wall mounted and not installed to manufacturer installation standards and it’s current location sitting on the floor should invalidate any certification issued. However I have had gas safe certificate issued every year and I am confused by what they said. If the boiler is not installed to manufacturer installation standard then how come all the past gas safe certificates have been issued ?
Go on to boxt.co.uk
Their website gives you a fixed price to have one of their boilers fitted. You have to answer a few questions about the type of installation. The quote is then worked out for you based on type of property, how many rads, where the boiler will be located, will it be fitted on an outside wall etc etc. I am not endorsing Boxt boilers just the use of their website to give you a ball park figure.
Do an internet search for a new boiler installation. I had one fitted last year, cheaper than two local installers and plenty of choice of price and boilers to suit your needs, some firms also offer interest free payment options (think one was called glow green??) and most have availability virtually immediately.
Baxi eco 830 c £1.2k with 10 year warranty
Always get 10 years boilers breakdown after 5 years
Materials c £1-1.2 depending on cost of copper and 22 vs 28 mm pipes
Power flush 350 ( this is a must for Baxis as they don’t warranty without it as dirt fills heat exchanger )
Also improved radiator function
Labour £400 to £1k for a day depending on who you let rip you off the most
More expensive does not guarantee correct installation
For unknown gas engineer get an independent gas cert after fitting before you pay so any faults are highlighted and you can get them to correct before paying
Get a second opinion on your cert
Google boiler installation regs and see if what you have been told is legit
There is a picture with where boiler can go and what measurements to include
That’s very expensive
Just because it’s British Gas it may not be installed correctly
I’ve heard horror stories
They don’t seem to understand pipe width changes if distance from gas meter is longer
I was offered by another contractor for a Worchester 4000 25KW for over 4500 pounds including 360 pounds +VAT of roofer they said required to create a new flue hole through my kitchen roof as the current one through the external wall for the current boiler wont be able to be reused given the new boiler is going to be installed higher up from its current location on the floor.
I also had quotes from other online companies ranging from 2500-2800 for same type of boiler, but they wont have any onsite survey before installation - they only asked for a few pictures and will assess online.
Trying to get the gut to use the online companies with subcontractors they will hire to install given the relative fair price.
Not sure why the local contractors always quoted a few times higher.
With my situation, which was very straightforward, I spoke to the engineer before installation after sending photographs.
A few of the other online companies contacted me a few days after their initial quotes offering discounts although by then I had made the necessary arrangements with the chosen contractor.
This profession is full of inexperienced people. I had cases they failed me for gas certificate (which passed many times previously) and I had to rub gas regulations to their face until they understand. I am not saying one way or another in your case but best to get a second opinion from someone you trust their knowledge. If the are correct then you must trace it back to person installed. If they mafe a fundamental mistake then give them a chance to correct I not go to gas safety register to see if the can do anything. They must have form of responsibility if they are dishing out certificates at a cost to professionals. P.S. I was quoted £4600 for slightly complex installation.
Was the gas safe cert issued by your Agent? I had this, installed, cert given, 3 years of Certs then it failed - if you have not had it serviced each year along side the gas safe check you will lose your warranty. I got a second opinion as the Agent wanted to install a new boiler, mine was 3y old! They were just in it for the money. The second opinion was useless, My third opinion laughed his head off when the Agent quoted her nonsense. If you research it, it’s often the flue placement, which is just a minor adjustment, I have fired the Agent and I now have my own guys who I rely on for Gas & Electrics - until I sell this one. Then I’m done with crooked Agents, useless installers and incompetent plumbers/ gas engineers.
