Why does this website take deposits?

Hi,

I paid a holding deposit, its over 48 hours now and the landlord has not been in contact?

I see some people say the landlord needs to give you a viewing before this deposit is taken?

If so why does this website allow you to make a deposit, if in reality its not the right way to do things?

Thanks

It’s a poor design. Message openrent and tell them so.

They need to change this.

You shouldn’t place a deposit without first viewing and then agreeing so with landlord first. Landlord will send back.

@Daz another example

Why did you send money if you didn’t see anything?

look at it this way .Why on earth make a deposit without seeing the place first . would you put a deposit on a car before you could examine it? Buyer beware ! It is not the fault of the website, the person who sends off a deposit without first seeing and agreeing is at fault

Deposits placed on cars all the time before viewing, with dealers that is. It’s almost the norm now. Covid accelerated it.

Its those unfamiliar with renting and how things work that’s the issue. I don’t think the rent now button should be shown unless the landlord chooses to reveal it for someone. I’ve had a few people click it and pay without confirming with me first (one viewed, one hadnt).

It’s clear to me its only there to try to get us dependent on using openrent for everything.

you mean without even driving a car first someone will put a deposit on it ? Even a 2nd hand car. That is some risk . I would never do it . My motto> see it ,pay cash take it away. If you do not like it , how can you be SURE you will get your deposit back ?

With many dealers yes, people don’t want to drive for hours without knowing car will still be there. Difference is It’s refundable though whether car is bought or not, no reason required, so deposit has a different meaning to rentals.

With review systems many dealers have upped their game.

What I found incredible is that during covid people would buy cars without even viewing them! Dealers would not allow viewing but people would still purchase in advance and just collect, I am talking used cars. It kept dealers afloat.

This is where good reputation comes into play! Not something I would do though.
