My landlord has renewed my accommodation contract for another 6 months without me giving permission for this.
The AST says it should just become a rolling contract after the first 6 months has been served.
Are they now legally bound to get another 6 months rent out of me?
I did not sign for, or agree to, any renewal.
So…for the detail if anybody may be so kind…
I signed a 6 month rental accommodation contract in march 22nd, 2024.
Its now August 24th 2024. The landlord first insisted I renew into another 6 month contract
starting on Sept 22nd 2024. However, I pointed out that the AST says that it should just
become a rolling accommodation contract where either party just has to give 2 months notice
to the other.
They then asked me to send my last three months bank statements so that the landlord could consider me for the
rolling contract.
I sent them, and a month later, they emailed me and said they had renewed my contract.
How can they have renewed it without me agreeing to this, or signing for it?
So now I have to pay rent to them for the next 6 months?..until March 22nd 2025?
This sounds like the letting agent is pushing for the tenancy renewal rather than the LL. They often want to renew so they can charge the LL the renewal fee. They will often say that the LL wants this when in fact it is the letting agent. Stick by your guns and don’t sign. They can’t force you and without your signature they don’t have a new tenancy. On the 22nd September it will automatically become a monthly rolling contract.
It may be me however I am slightly confused
Did you wish to stay for the next 6 months in the property? If so whats the issue?
If not had you notified anyone that you intended to leave?
