So I rented a property with an ex work colleague back in May 2024. He basically did a runner after 4 months and left me paying for everything and owing me money. To cut a long story short, I have now left the property 2 weeks ago. There seems to be a problem with me getting the deposit back as the original email to Open Rent was through his email account although the money came from my bank account. My landlord has told Open Rent about this but I’m still waiting for the deposit back. I can’t even call anyone as they don’t speak to you apparently and do everything through email, but I can’t even do that because they haven’t got my email address! It’s so frustrating because it’s my money and I can’t seem to get any answers though I have proof it came out of my bank account! Any advice would be appreciated, thank you.
How do you know openrent haven’t already released it to your ex friend / joint tenant?
He wasn’t a joint tenant, it was in my name, he just moved in and paid half of the rent for 4 months. He set up the account with Open Rent with his email address as he was the one who found the property, all monies came out of my account. I’m liaising with my ex landlord to try and change the email address to mine. It’s very frustrating as you can’t actually speak to a person at Open Rent.
If his email address was the email which you agreed to have all notices served to. That email address will be in your tenancy agreement. Then he could (presumably) already have received that email and drawn the deposit off to his own personal account.
Do you know the password to login to his openrent account, as presumably you could login and change the email address, or at least view the status of the deposit?
Maybe @mod_harry can help.
Or contact OR using contact button at bottom of Openrent FAQs page
Good luck
Hi @Michelle58
I can’t see any tenancies linked to your OpenRent account, if you can contact us from the email address you used to sign the tenancy agreement we’ll be in a much better position to assist here.
The standard process is for the whole security deposit (less any deductions) to be released to the lead tenant, we’ll ask them to confirm their bank details.
